HORSE BACK RIDING

The West Country is horse country. This area has many different outfitters to choose from or you can see the countryside by yourself on the many horse trails.
The local outfitters can also help with your holiday on horseback. Whether you've never ridden before or you're a skilled rider, there's a unique experience waiting for you, from one hour trail rides to week on adventures.

There are several recreation areas that provide equestrian facilities and allow horses on site. These equestrian staging areas, unless noted below, usually provide loading/unloading ramps and hitching rails.

  • Aylmer
    • Located 14 km (8.4mi) south of Nordegg on Secondary Highway 734 (Forestry Trunk Road)

      Note: There is no water well at Aylmer
  • Blackstone
    • Located 30 km (18 mi.) north of Nordegg on Secondary Highway 734
    • 10 camping units
    • Water well not provided
  • Coliseum
    • 4 km (2.4mi.) northwest of Nordegg
    • 12 unit parking lot
    • Provide access to Coliseum Trail: 6km trail leads to a panoramic view of the area.
    • No loading/unloading ramp or hitching rails but horses are allowed on site
    • Water well not provided
  • Crescent Falls
    • Located 25 km (15 mi.) southwest of Nordegg on Highway 11
    • 26 camping units, 14 unit parking lot
  • Cutoff Creek
    • 68 km (40.8 mi.) west of Caroline on Cutoff Creek forestry road
    • Primary staging area for the Upper Clearwater Forest Land Use Zone
    • Loading/unloading ramp, 6 hitching rails
  • Elk Creek
    • Located 77 km south of Nordegg along Secondary Highway 734
    • 13 camping units, 10 unit parking lot
  • Hummingbird
    • Located 8 km (4.8 mi.) west of Ram Falls on Onion Lake Road
    • 12 unit parking lot
    • Loading/unloading ramp, 4 hitching rails
  • Jackfish Lake
    • 53 km (31.8 mi.) west of Rocky Mountain House on Highway 11
    • 8 camping units
    • Water well not provided
  • Peppers Lake
    • Located 80 km (48 mi.) southeast of Nordegg on Secondary Highway 734
    • 16 camping units and 7 unit parking lot
    • Loading/unloading ramp, 5 hitching rails
    • Water well not provided (drinking water is available at Elk Creek Recreation Area, 5km E)
  • Prairie Creek
    • Located 41 km (24.6 mi.) southwest of Rocky Mountain House on Secondary Highway 752
    • 50 camping units, 20 unit parking lot
  • Ram Falls
    • Located 64 km (38.4 mi.) south of Nordegg on Secondary Highway 734
    • 54 camping units, 44 unit parking lot
  • Seven Mile
    • Located 103 km south of Nordegg on Secondary Highway 734
    • 36 camping units, 15 unit parking lot
  • South Fork
    • Located 28 km (16.8 mi) southwest of Rocky Mountain House on Secondary Highway 752
    • 22 camping units, 10 unit parking lot


Stay on the designated trails. The widening and development of new trails requires written approval from a Forest Officer. Many trails are used for a variety of recreational activities. Slow down, be courteous and respect other users and their limitations. Avoid wet, soft and sensitive areas. Obey signs and observe the rules for the Forest Land Use Zone you are in.
