CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

Bighorn Wildland Recreation Area: This huge recreation area, covering 2,463 square km of rugged alpine terrain, contains breathtaking mountainous backcountry terrain with very few facilities or services, especially in the winter. There are about 700 km of trails, which are a combination of the old forestry pack trails established in the early 1900's and a number of mineral exploration roads and trails. The trail system is not maintained or groomed. Because there is so much space here, do not expect to find much in the way of broken trail to follow, although snowmobilers also use many of the trails. All backcountry skiers/snowshoers need to know what they're doing, how to travel in avalanche country, and be prepared for difficult conditions. Access to the recreation is provide via Highway 11 and the all weather, gravel Forestry Trunk Road (#734) and Red Deer River Roads.

Stay on the designated trails. The widening and development of new trails requires written approval from a Forest Officer. Many trails are used for a variety of recreational activities. Slow down, be courteous and respect other users and their limitations. Avoid wet, soft and sensitive areas. Obey signs and observe the rules for the Forest Land Use Zone you are in. If you have concern about trail conditions or appropriate use, please call (403) 845-8250.
